One of the fundamental part of Search Engine Optimization is Keywords. Words are really important to optimize your blog post. Ensure that you spend more time on learning the basics of Search Engine Optimization which will later help you in greater extent. In this post i will try to provide in depth knowledge about  the techniques and usages of keywords.

Advantages Of Your Niche

Do some research about your blog. You must completely know the contents you are going to cover in your blog. It will be useful for you to find the best keyword. Keyword research is one the essential steps of SEO, don’t skip this part ever. Go through the 10 important things you should know before starting their first blog to know more about niches.

List Of Keywords

Now you have to list the important topics and ideas related to your blog which your targeting audience may be searching for. If you have a blog related to soccer in India. Then you can search for keywords like

  1. How to become football player in India.
  2. Indian Super League vs Indian League
  3. Will kaka join Kerala Blasters.

If you dont know where to start find tools like SEM Rush and Google Keyword planner. I use both of these tools personally. While using SEM Rush just type your competitors site URL, it will give all the links of that site that have been ranked in google, use these keywords to create new and original articles. If you use Google Keyword Planner, it becomes even more simple, just type your query you will provided with new topics and ideas. Make a list of these ideas derived from the obtained keywords.

What To Do With The Keywords?

Once you have finished listing your keyword, all you need to do is to find the best out of them. To be ranked higher in Search Engines you must use the words which your target audience use often and also it should have some monetary value. Also you should ensure that you are not using a bad keyword.

See the below image to know the difference between good and bad keyword.

Keywords in SEO

How to become a footballer in India

Before explaining the above pictures, let me explain some of the jargon’s used in SEO.

Keywords:

A phrase or a set of words which drives traffic to the URL. It is also called as target keyword.

Position:

It is the position of the URL for the specific keyword. The n term defines that the URL is in nth position in Google Search. All these SEO are done to make our content to rank higher in the specific keyword.

Volume:

This is the number the times, peoples searches that specific keyword in google.

Short-Tail:

Short-Tail keywords will contain maximum of 3 words.

EX: SEO Optimization, Keywords in SEO.

Long-Tail:

Long-Tail keywords will contain 3 or more words.

EX: How to Optimize my website for SEO?, A Guide about keywords in SEO.

Now take a look at the above two screenshots.

In the second screenshot, My blog Fifa Modders ranks first in google for the Long-Tail keyword “How to become footballer in India”. But in the first screenshot look at the volume section which is only 20, which means only 20 people search this keyword per month. So, using this keyword is absolutely waste of time and it will only give us 0% traffic. Try to avoid keywords like this.

Now the screenshots for Good Keywords are below.

How to do keywords research

Keywords research using SEM Rush example

Here in the above two screenshots, I used the keyword “How to use SEM Rush”. In the second screenshot, you can see that there are 3600 searches for the word SEM Rush and also you can see the first screenshot which displays the ad. That means companies are giving importance to this keyword and they are also investing in it. So this is what we call a Good Keyword. Always do this kind of keyword researches, which will be returned later in terms of visitors.

Long-Tail and Short-Tail Keywords

These are another two factors related to keywords. Consider that you choose a keyword ” Keyword Planner “, It is one of the broad keyword which possibly has hundreds of thousands of searches per month, thus increasing the competition level. You cannot predict what the user is searching for. It may be the uses of Keyword Planner, tutorials of keyword Planner or may be alternatives of keyword planner.

So our idea is to use long tail keywords in order to reduce the competition and also to find more volumes of searches. Use can use Long Tail Pro to find these kind of keywords.

Keyword research is the fundamental of SEO process where the foundation of your blog lies. Always try to spend some good amount of time for Keyword Research. Research thoroughly the keyword to clearly understand its difficulty because if you’re trying to rank a keyword on which sites are already on Top then you are out of the game.

Try to use Long-Tail keywords with less competition and moderate amount of searches. So now you must have some basics about keywords research. Lets dug deep into the concept.

When I first learned about these Keywords research and SEO stuffs, first question that came into my mind is

Who the heck is ranking my website?
And how the hell they are doing this?

The answer is nothing but an algorithm developed mainly for this purpose.

Importance of Keyword Density

Keyword Density is nothing but a percentage of times a keyword or a phrase appears in the website compared to the total number of words in the corresponding site. It will exclude <html> tags and other related tag elements, that means count only depends upon the total number of words visible to the users in the front end.

The optimum keyword density is considered to be 1 to 3 percent of your total number of words, more than that will be considered as keyword spamming.

The formula to calculate keyword density in the webpage can be given as  (Nkr/Tkn)*100, where Nkr is the total number of keywords in the article and Tkn is the total number of words in the article.

The formula to calculate keyword phrase density in the webpage can be given as (Nkr * Nwp /Tkn)*100, where Nwp is the number of words in the phrase.

you can read this wiki article on Keyword Density to know further information related to the topic.

What will happen when Keyword Density goes beyond the specified limit?

Avoid Keyword Stuffing

When the keyword density is more than the specified limit than it is called Keyword Stuffing. Always know the difference between keyword targeting and keyword stuffing. Keyword Stuffing is absolutely harmful for you blog.

To avoid keyword stuffing, install the Yoast SEO plugin in your WordPress site. It calculates your keyword density while you type your article.

Now you will know keywords plays important role in Search Engine Optimization. All you have to do is to try new keywords around your niche to find the best one that suits your site.
